Central A/C Question

The Calif. PUC has offered me a buy-down A/C loan of 3.5% if I change out my central A/C to a 15 Seer unit or 4.0% to a 14 Seer unit. The actual difference in interest is negligible but the cost of the more efficient 15 Seer unit may be much higher. I won't know until the 3 A/C contractors start contacting me.

Does anybody have any personal thoughts on brands or Seer ratings? The unit will be 4 tons.

I found the folks over at HVAC_Talk VERY helpful. They don't discuss prices(as they are very subjective region to region..plus thye are mostly contrsctors themselves)..but will definately help you out with technical questions and how do deal with contractors...

We have a 13 seer Trane we got, oh a year ago give or take a few weeks. We got their 80% 2 stage firing (gas) with variable speed van furnace and then mated it with a 13 seer AC unit for a complete HVAC system. Great system. This is all in Utah, mind you.

I think Trane is the way to go. They have units up to 19 Seer!
