I've not been hit with it yet, but a few colleagues of mine have picked up the "xxxserver" dialler and it's causing untold grief. It's a virus type program which installs itself on your computer, disconnects your modem, sets the modem audio level to zero, redials a premium rate number at a rate of UK£1.50 (roughly US$2.75) per minute and then redirects the browser to porn sites. Running the uninstaller doesn't work; this thing gets around Norton, McAfee, Adaware, Spybot and a host of similar programs.
It was created by a company called Edvan Solutions, who are based in Miramar, Florida and who don't seem too keen on answering their e-mails. The few replies they have sent out contain a link to another uninstaller, which works for a few hours before the thing pops up again.
For pity's sake, this thing is downloading pornographic material onto people's computers without their knowledge or permission, exposing children to it in the progress. This is along with skyrocketing people's telephone bills.
You can read discussion threads on the problem here and here. There is a post in the first link containing a list of e-mail addresses for the local Miramar dignitaries and press. There are also hints and tips on how to get rid of it, but for many people the only solution seems to be a total reformat of the hard drive.
Are any CPFers having problems with this and does anyone have any advice on what to do or any clue as to what a UK citizen's legal position might be ?
