I am thinking about buying myself a paintball gun.
I love all sorts of shooting games etc.
I do alot of live fire (real guns and bullets) swat type exsercises.

I havent looked into them in a couple of yearrs, so I am alittle behind on the best guns and equipment.

I think last time I looked into it, I could get started for about $350.

OK guys, feed me with your paintball knowledge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks

Why not go airsofting? It's usually cheaper, a lot less messier, and lots of fun. Also the guns are very realistic looking.

Airsoft is all about the honor system. Usually you can pretty much tell when somebody has been hit though.

You can get a good AEG (automatic electric gun) for about $350, maybe a little more. Ammo is way cheaper for airsofting than it is for paintballing....so IMO it's cheaper.

You can get a spring loaded pistol for only 20, and it's pretty decent. There are also spring rifles too. Then there's gas powered guns, which area step up from the spring. After gas its AEGs! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

Ticey you should see if you can find people who play airsoft or paintball. If I were you, I would go with the sport that has the most people in your area playing. Almost always, the more people the better, IMO.

Airsoft links galore! Check out numbers 3 and 6 on the "News, Forums, Reviews, etc." section for two good airsoft forums.

Let me know what you end up going with, and what equipment you end up getting, either way.

As for Paintball.. I recommend that you go with an Airgun Designs Automag. You can get one and a compressed air tank for about what you are looking to spend.

Whats the best Automag for ~$250?
I would like to keep it around $350 for gun, mask, and extra 12oz tank, and a couple other odds and ends.
So that leave around $250 for the gun itself.

I am having a hard time finding guns that dont say "HEY! HERE I AM, LOOK AT MY BRIGHT SHINNY COLORS!" lol

Go with Eric's recommendation and hit Automags.org. You can find some good deals there and, like here, the folks are good to deal with.

If you need any help on the gun, let me know.

My Automag was stolen years ago /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Then I went for the money pit! An Autococker! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/xyxgun.gif
Now, I play with a WDP Dark Angel /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif
I still miss my Automag /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
You can't get go wrong with an Automag at that price range. Can take CO2 and HPA without an extra regulator right guys?
I also play airsoft too, different type of scenario in airsofting, more of a Special Forces type games.

Thanks alot guys, I will be looking at all this gret info when I get home from work today.
I will be playing alot of special forces type stuff, but I really dont think there are nearly as many airsoft ppl here as paintball.

I looked at the Autocokers a few years back, but the gun seems alittle large to me.
Also, is it even selectable fro full auto to semi?

I would really like to keep the gun itself under $300.

The Automag is a semi auto gun. "AUTOmag" is just a name, not implying that it is full auto.

What other brands are good? I take it Automag is the best?
I dont see any cheaper Automags that have daul triggers though.

I hear abotu teh spyders all the time, but are they any good?
I have no idea what I am doing lol. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

This is the best deal going right now. Direct from AGD:

RT ULE Custom

Very sweet gun at an unheard of price. This is what I'm upgrading to.

I like the design of this one.
http://www.kingman.com/section/emarker/guns/e99_avant.html

But, design isnt everything, and I dont know how it shoots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Eric, that AGD looks nice, but I was really hoping not to spend that much on the gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

How much better is it, compared to the spyder linked to above?

Also,,,, i take it the preasure on these guns is adjustable?
Do some guns go higher than others?

the Spyders are good guns but Mags are better built and more reliable.

Have you looked at the Tippmanns? Good rugged guns.

I dont like tipmanns at all.
I cant stand that second hamdle up front, drives me batty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That automag one seems pretty cool.
I guess it just seems like "less of a gun" being so simple in design.
I dont like how it has a single trigger, trigger.

From what I hear, the dual triggers are nice for those, "oh crap" situations when you just need to throw alot of paint. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

jtice,

Just like torches, there are levels of paintball equipment.

Top level examples: (Luxeon III and V)
Automag
Autococker
Angel
Some Indian Creek Designs

Mid-level examples:(Luxeons and high powered incandescents)
Indian Creek Designs
Tippman
SOME Kingman (Upgraded Spyder variants)
SOME Kingman clones
Some Brass Eagle

Bottom Level examples:(Unmodded Maglites)
Most Kingmans
Most 2 tube guns (Spyder clones)
Some Brass Eagle

Bottom, Bottom examples:(Cheap off the shelf lights)
Most Brass Eagle
Most stuff sold at Wal-Mart or other sporting goods stores. (Sometimes they come up with some midlevel stuff in these stores)

Comparing the equipment is like the difference between Maglites and Surefires and between incandescents and Luxeons.

If you want the Surefire of paintball, go with Automags, and that Mag in Eric Maier's post is incredible. I paid close to 500 to put a USED mag like that together.

Go for compressed air/nitrogen if you have someone in your area to fill your tanks. If not, then I would consider using a Tippman instead of a 'Mag as they are more tolerant in colder weather of the CO2.

The Automag site posted above gives great info, and is almost as friendly as CPF. The owner/designer of Automag is frequently on the site as well, and he will talk to you and answer questions if you happen to be on at the right time.

Good Luck and have fun!

Bill
