Yeah!

Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne made it to 211,400 feet this morning breaking several records in the process. This is a big step towards private space flight.

Even though they are practically in space, there is still a small amount of atmosphere at that altitude. With enough speed, any particles in space will create drag and heat.

I doubt it is that much though for this type of trajectory. Since escape velocities are not used, reentry speeds are relatively low. I think a composite shell is sufficient (no tweaky tiles or heat shields).
