Just saw a newbie post and thought I would check out what his membership number is, and since it's double what it was in march of 2003, I thought it signifigant.

Hi Keith,

Yeah, I remember when we were newbies. I was very aware of who the other newbies were and responded with enthusiasm to each of their posts. It feels like those of us who came on board in Spring 2003 belong to a club together.

But I also notice that my curiosity and inquisitiveness have faded somewhat. I used to read every post. I'm afraid I no longer have the enthusiasm to do that, now that I'm more than a year old. Interesting what aging does. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I signed on in August 2000 with only ten additional members on CPF besides myself. Back then, I didn't have any problems reading every single post, every single day.
Now that the CPF membership is ~7,850, I can no longer do that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
So I just choose threads that look interesting from their titles, or those containing a question I might be able to answer.

Does that number really reflect how many members there are? I recall a couple months ago that SASHA posted that they had just culled out over 1000 members that were spammers, etc, but my user number stayed at 6645 even though there were no longer that many members.

My point is that I don't think that the software 're-cycles' old, no longer in use user numbers. I think it just moves on.

But then again, I've been wrong many times before -- today already, in fact.

The actual situation regarding members is more complicated.

I believe we use how busy the CPF is as a better track of our development [growth?]. These stats are often impressive and I'd like to thank Sasha for all her efforts and thank all those who support CPF.

Perhaps Sasha will post some stats?

Another spring '03 chicken. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crackup.gif

Although I've only been registered here since last spring, I've been reading posts here long before that. My interest hasn't really changed much, but my free time to post changes all the time.

I believe that last I heard, Sasha estimated roughly 2000 active members posting, but that is what I remember, so it may be wrong.

Jared,

That 2000 active members rings a bell with me, too. I think that was the number of users active on at least a monthly basis. I may be wildly off, but for some reason, I have "300" stuck in my head for the number of members active on a weekly basis, or twice weekly basis, or maybe that was from a phone conversation with SilverFox who estimated that the core of the really active CPF members was something like 300.

Don't know. But I'd love to hear the actual figures.

The usernumbers reflect how many users have registered since the beginning of CPF. From time to time, I go through and delete users who have less than 5 posts and have not logged in in over 18 months... give or take. So I guess you can figure that I've deleted @ 2000 inactive members.

Yes, the figures ARE impressive... and you can now see why we sometimes have the problems we do with overloading the server and why we really do need to upgrade. I'm still trying to work out a "deal" with the server dudes on this. We are going to have to go to TWO dedicated boxes to handle the traffic that we have... it ain't gonna be cheap.

Sasha, Maybe a big raffle is in order to fund another server. I think there should be enough support from everyone to make it happen, especially if it would prevent the weeknight outages. Just my 2 pesos.

As of 03/22/04 Sasha said CPF was averaging about 4 gigs of bandwidth transfer each day.
