Laser module - searching

Hi - sorry for the noobie ness of this post, but my search has come up dry. I am building my daughter a home made LED light that will use 2 x 123 cells, and I would like to add a red laser pointer to it. I am thinking 620 - 630nm, normal legal, but quality laser.

I will be using an LDO to current limit the LED. Is this ok for driving a red laser ?

I would like to buy a module - laser + optics, but of course there are space constraints.

Suggestions ?

Thanks a lot - HarryN

I only have about 10mm depth to work with. So far, the pens I have seen have longer packages than this.

Sorry, I am more up on LEDs than laser diodes.

From the data sheets I am looking at, is is a "safe" assumption that these are nominaly current driven devices at 30 - 60ma, and there is a feedback circuit to prevent it from being putting out more than the nominal 3 mW limit ?

They seem to also have a Vin of nominally 2.5 - 3 volts similar to red LEDs ?

Thanks

smallest key chain laser I have ever seen is this one.
I paid 8 bucks for mine including shipping.
It is a little longer than a photon 2
If you took it apart the module inside might meet your size spec.
mine has been on my keys for 2 years with no problems.
It runs on 3 tiny 1.5 volt button cells.

Maybe you will have to seperate the diode from the
pc board and re package it to meet your size/volume spec.
