I use a Bissel ProHeat Clearview for cleaning my carpets. It does a good job of getting most stains out, including cat puke and fresh urine spots. Here's an old thread on vaccums. I use an Oreck XL and like it alot, but I'm sure there's better.
The Bissel was under $200 and the Oreck was a gift so I don't know. You can get an Oreck at a good price if you get one reconditioned from the dealer.

When it comes to bagless vaccum cleaners there is only one choice.. Dyson. They make the best vaccum cleaners by far. They really are quite amazing. I highly recommend that you check them out. They aren't cheap but they are worth every penny. I have the DC11 model which is a canister style but they also make uprights.

Dyson makes an incredible vaccum.... a little on the expensive side but I tell you, it will pull stuff unknown to man out of your carpets....
