It was almost inevitable. I've heard about using botnets for shady commercial webhosting, but not spam or DDoS for hire.

Just when you get to thinking they've reached the bottom, again, then this starts; a variation of the 419 Nigerian scam. This one could probably be treated as terrorist activity. It's certainly extortion at the least. If one isn't too familiar with emails, and that it's best ignored, it could create a great deal of concern.
