"Tenatavely for September 2004, Industry Canada intends to create the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), also modeled on our southern neighbours. GMRS is the same type of service as FRS, with radios that have a higher transmit power, thus being more attractive to business users."

FRS is limited to 1/2 watt, while GMRS goes up to 2 watts, IIRC.

GMRS handhelds can go up to 5 watts. Even higher power levels are allowed but the transmitter electronics has to pass more stringent tests for frequency accuracy and stability. If you are willing to spend around $200 per handheld you can get ones that will transmit GMRS at 5 watts. The cheap GMRS handhelds seem to all be 1 watt.
