I like most all kinds of music, but I'm always looking for something new. So, I want to know about some different bands or musicians that you like alot but maybe nobody else has ever heard of.

Mainstream stuff doesn't count. I want to know who's different but good and what kind of music they play.

I'll give you a few examples:

Dave Alvin - rock/folk/blues
Southern Culture On the Skids - "alt" country
New Math - 80's New Wave

So, what's your best kept secret band or musician?

Thanks.

I just listen to anything on the radio basically. In my mind you can't go wrong with Linkin Park.

Soil - Scars

I would say Rammstein, but everyone's heard of them now. Soil's good and not overplayed yet.

Definately a hard rock/metal thing though. Sounds like you might prefer lighter music.

Actually, just about anything. One of my favorite groups was the Ramones, so loud and fast is OK.

Thanks.

Re: What Kind of Different Music Should I Listen

I used to listen to mainstream pop and rock and still do but have been expanding my horizons as I have gotten older, mainly out of boredom. A friend of mine lent me an album from Chic Corea called "Return to Forever" originally recorded in 1973, no less. I had never even heard of Chic Corea but found it to be an excellent cd and now will investigate his other music.

(re)discover Frank Zappa

Lots of his albums to choose from, too, and each is very different from the next.

My all-time favorite album is 'Bible of Dreams", by Juno Reactor. It's electronic, but not the annoyingly repetitive techno dance kind of electronic - it's much more relaxing. Let's see if I can find a link... Here you go... (Amazon.com link)

Give roots reggae a try...

Sly and Robbie
Toots and the Maytals
Peter Tosh
Burning Spear
Israel Vibration
Jimmy Cliff
Black Uhuru
and of course, Bob Marley, a man who was IMHO, a living prophet.

Really listening to reggae is a tremendously interesting peek into the society of the West Indians. A society that most outsiders never cared to know, never dared to know. Their struggles, their fears, their beliefs, and self pride all come out in their songs.

Pop music is for the brain dead. Gimmee something that stimulates the thinking parts of my cocount.

-Louis Jordan. He did a lot of very cool swing and early proto-rock stuff. Lots of humor and innuendo in many of the songs.

-Steely Dan/Donald Fagen

-Disturbed (fairly mainstream, but 'Believe' is one of the few CDs that I routinely listen to the entire thing)

Kaseri, Awesome selection of hardcore!! Bad Brains is the most unknown, and ultra-influential bands of all time. As a matter of fact, I'm spinning I Against I right now.

There are a couple bands I'd add to your list, if someone really wanted to get into hardcore. That would be Black Flag, the Minutemen, X, and the Dead Kennedys.

Re: What Kind of Different Music Should I Listen

There's a good band called Fatwall Jack that does good blues tunes kinda homestyle. The CD is Girl Next Door. It's a different take on traditional Blues, and is catchy and has more energy, like a Chicago Blues band might. The lead singer has a fun voice.
