How do you start up in safe mode? My friends cpu is infected and won't stay online. Any suggestions?

IIRC you have to press F8 while the CPU is booting up at the 'Loading Windows XP' screen, while the progress bar is advancing in the black & white screen.

F8. you have to press at the right time, usually just after the first POST beep. best way is to keep pressing it rapid fire style, say once a second, or two times a second, and it will go thru at the right time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. can't do it too quick or too soon, or a keyboard error message comes up.

Has he got sasser? See this

If he's got broadband he'll need to unplug the LAN and boot. You can be a good friend and take the patches to him on disc/USB stick.

Hey Saaby, I don't know. When he logs on he gets kicked off in a few seconds or minutes. He's tried to do a Norton virus scan but it doesn't finish. He let his Norton subscription lapse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

It's sasser. Maybe blaster, but 95% chance it's sasser. Unplug his internet connection and try again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Unplug it from the network if it's broadband, if it's dialup then just don't connect. Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ to download the Stinger removal tool on a different computer (it should fit on a disk) and copy it onto the infected comptuer and run it. After it's removed the virus, get the updates from a different computer via thumb drive, or CD, etc. and load them onto the infected computer. That will hopefully take care of it.
