I like the VIP.
I liked the looks of the VIP in one of its original prototypes a little better, one with fewer fins. I thought about it for a while and decided that the part of the VIP exposed to air should have fins to maximize the surface area for exchanging heat with the air BUT the body should be smooth to maximize surface area touching the hand.
I created this body from 6061 aluminum. It's a little thinner in the middle to help your grip. It flares on the ends to provide enough meat for the threads and to match the diameter of the tailcap and head.
This is the first full sized flashlight part I've made on my lathe. I've made little parts before, and altered a few lights. This light it looks kind of cool. I've considered dying it or anodizing it. Maybe I'll just seal it. I also considered knurling the inner section. I might also lightly fin the part nearest the head.
I'll not be making any more, but I'll post the drawing that I worked off of if that helps anyone.
