I checked my daughters Arc AAA(rarely used) today and found it wouldn't lite up.Upon inspection I found the battery had leaked out its back end making a royal mess on the rear contact. To much junk back there for a pencil eraser so I stuffed a wad of medium steel wool down the tube and spun it around with a 1/8" drill bit on my cordless drill. The steel wool grabs onto the drill bits "threads" and doesn't slip.If you try this go at slow speed, don't push the bit to hard and make sure the drill is turning when you withdraw it and the steel wool will come out with the bit.Her Arc is back in action again in just a few minutes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

Good tip, Mrd.

The major battery companies offer free replacement of any device that is damaged by a leaking cell - regardless of the price. In fact, I have seen posts on CPF where they have had very expensive flashlights replaced.
