aaa won\'t turn off

greetings all,

my wife's aaa recently had a minor problem. she was using it last night, but found she couldn't turn it off. i took a look and also had problems getting the head to turn. the light was nice and bright, but the threads just seized up. it didn't feel like it was cross-threaded, so i just forcefully unscrewed it. upon examination, the threads looked fine so i screwed the head back on, but the light wouldn't come on. i unscrewed it again, then checked the battery, and it was down to less than 0.5v. after installing a new battery, everything is back to normal - good as new. apparently, the battery must have shorted out, but i don't know how. anyone experience this before?

Re: aaa won\'t turn off

Yes, the cell outgassed as it was depleted under load. The pressure prevented the easy removal of the head. Next time it's hard to turn, just push the head and body together, forcefully, while turning the parts. That will counter the internal pressure. Goes to show how water proof and gas tight the AAA is.
