TNC\'s AA modded to 1000ma !!! *PICTS*

Hi everybody,

I have one of TNC's AA lights modded to DD a TV1K with
a AA Li-ion. TNC's AA's are a work of art. I've never
seen such attention to detail - I can't find any variations
in CNC'd aluminum. BEAUTIFUL.

But stinky me, I had to mod this little guy.

Similar to what did to the ARC-AA-Mega and the UltraGLux3
HERE

I did the same to the TNC AA except for the two/three stage switch.
(I have to find a way to put a good switch w/ resistors in this tight
area)

From a full charge (4.2v) it draws a whopping 1200ma !!!
You figure how much light it's putting out!
30 minutes later, it reaches 3.3v drawing about 600ma.

As long as I keep it in my hands or in a cup of water it's okay.
Sitting on the table and at full charge, it reaches 150F in about 1 minute. But about 10 minutes into the discharge, if left on the table
it will take about 3 minutes to reach that temp. However, in my hot
little hands, the temperature is kept below 150F. (Although the
first 2 minutes I have to switch hands every minute)

As long as it's in my hands, this little thing will put out lots of
lumens!

compared with:
a stock Arc AA (yes, no fair here)
a Streamlight Jr modded with a TXOK, SO17XA, boosted to 800mah @battery
and also an Arc4+ first rev1

more than the arc4+



This time just the the Arc4+(left) and the TNCAA mod(right) to duke

it's modded with li-ion driven at 200mah) (The arc4+ is on it's end

Nice mod but how will it affect the LED's lifetime being run that hot & high? Besides seems like it's too hot to handle too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wow.gif

It gets pretty warm and quick especially the first few minutes but not
too hot to hold. If you leaving on the table too long, it may get too
hot to pickup and will damage the LED.

But if you keep it in either hand it should be fine. The life of
the led may be shortened a bit but not drastically as I hadn't noticed
it. I'm sure it'll outlast a a 5w's spec of 500 hours.

If I keep it in my hand, it doesn't get any hotter than an ARC4+ on
level 1.

It doesn't have a booster circuit to waste energy/heat on. So
everything goes to the led. Those regulators always have a
certain % efficiency and guess where the other 20% or so efficiency
goes? heat.

I really love these li-ions. advantages are: lightweight, low
discharge rate (1% per month versus 1% per week or worse), higher
energy density, and no need for regulators.
I'm not bashing regulators though - they have their place -
I love my arc4+ as it gives me constant light output until the
end - but li=ions is just another nice a solution.

quick note.

The AA weighs 1.9 oz with the battery.
The Arc4+ weighs 2.6 oz with li-ions and 2.9 with primaries.
