They said it slammed at 100 mph into the ground. Being still intact after that says something for engineering.

It's amazing that NASA managed to blow this one. The USAF used to recover spy satellite film all the time with their older satellites using a similar method. The satellite would drop a film pack and a C-131 would snatch the parachute lines in mid-air.
