I ordered one from cabelas, but called today to talk to the product specialist, unlike the jon e hand warmer, he seemed to know about lights.

Long story short he agreed as far as led lamps were concerned that were compact the xpg 5 watt was best over all in power and run time.

When it came to brightness he said leds were never as bright as a standard bulb and further more, the 20 led unit they sell was brighter than the xpg.

I then told him I have a few led lamps and they are mainly dim to the point you can look directly into it and not get blinded or blink. I asked if that was the case with this, he did say no and reverted to teh fact it was bright, but I almost feel like I made a mistake ordering it.

Are these $100 led flashlights effing bright, freaking bright, or yeah, thats bright man, but my dollar store light is brighter.

Cabela's has a satisfaction guarantee that's for real. If you don't like it, all you're out is shipping.

I do see other people make lights, but like mentioned I know and would feel fine with returning it to cabelas than someone who makes lights on the side.

Oh, I think I see now. The xpg 5 watt light at cabelas is another name brand flashlight which sells for less than cabelas wants for theirs with their logo on it??? If its a few bucks I dont think I will flip out that much. If its 50 bucks, yeah I would.

I have one thing to say and that is SUREFIRE. You will never have a problem with one of those! I guarantee it! For your purposes I would probably look into the L series ( L1-L7)

Check out the Surefire KL1 or KL4 head on the new Vitalgear bodies, which come with a clickie switch I believe.

I believe the KL1s have 3 watts now. It seems Surefire somewhat underrates their lumens and runtimes. Depends on what lumen/size/runtime tradeoff you're looking for.

It sounds like you will be using this light on a regular basis (for reading?). In that case, I would probably go with a rechargeable. My Tigerlight is bright as hell (300 lumens I think) and runs for about 1.1 hours, and it's rechargeable, although it takes 10 hours to recharge from empty. And it costs around $100.

One light has an INCREDIBLY hard time doing it all.

My best lights are hybrids. Streamlights all. Twin Tasks 1L 2L 3AA and 3C and 3CXP Xenon/LED.

The 3CXP is the closest to do it all that I have. It has LEDs for close up and walking around, and a Xenon beam that BLOWS all the TTs AWAY! for brighter and throw.

Only 5W LED I have is my Space NeedleII (3x123 in M*g 2C). It is BRIGHT! But doesn't stay bright for a real long time.

Best LED light I have at this time? Toss up. Elektrolumens Starlux (3D 1W 30mm optic) is my big best LED.

Lambda 3W Drop in pill is my best small light (2NimH AA in a minim*g).

A hundred bucks sounds kinda high.

What does this have to do with your question? Not a damn thing!

Nevermind!

Nawww, I just want a pocket spot light with the white LED lamp and use off and on. No more than a minute at a time or less. Mainly to spot things on flyers, spec sheets and at or under the hood of trucks.

I did find a thread on it and it was somewhat useless. I did search for the 5 watt lamp mentioned earlier, it looks the same and it was priced over 50 bucks, but I did not know the website or would of placed an order with them.

Well, anyway, I already ordered it and think that will be the only way to really find out if it works for me from what I can gather here.

Just received an email that my order was shipped. I checked the shipping status and see it arrived in Richmond at noon today. Maybe tomorrow or Friday I will get to play with it???
