I'm looking for a 1W Luxeon light that can be powered off 3xAAA cells. The catch here is that I would like the cells to be arranged "side by side" (as in one of those 3AAA-to-D adapters), not tip-to-end (as in the new Gerbers). I don't really care if the light uses a battery carrier or not.

Any links are appreciated.

Your post says 3AA/3AAA, which is it ?

The 3AAA with a one watt sucks in run time. A 3 AA would give about three times the run.

I get a run-time of 90 minutes (1-1/2 hours) with either a stock ALX-1113A 3AA or modified ALX-1113A.

You are right JohnK...does greenLED mean 3AA or 3AAA Luxeon lights?

Re: 3xAAA 1W Luxeon light? ALX-1113A vs Dorcy

yeah - wonder how the new Dorcy 3AAA compares
to the ALX-1113A... how will the Dorcy "AAA" batteries last when driving 1w LED.

Hm. That ALX-816A lookss to be the same housing as the 1812C. I'll bet that the AAA carrier outputs 3V, and you can just drop a pair of C cells in it and experience longer runtime (assuming the carrier is the same OD as a C cell and the body is bored out the same size, of course).

I've looking at these and they are much larger than I thought. I was initially thinking about a small Lux light that would use small "standard" batteries (hence the AAA). I maybe stuck with using 1x123's.

The 1812C is a good 8" long with the head being over 2" in diameter. It is by no means a pocket light.

A single AAA cell won't be able to provide much juice to a Luxeon (unless you use the new lithium AAA).

I just gave the 816A a try and it is NO GO for C cells. The C cells are just barely too large to fit the body of the light. Too bad...C cells would have been a nice back up for the light.

I did do a simple mod to the 816A. I just popped out the 1-watt low dome Luxeon the is/was kinda white with a green ring around the beam (P3JW) to a much more pleasant white 3-watt (TV1J) emitter. I left the stock electronics in the light. That simple 15 minute job gave my 816A a nice boost in light output. The one watt emitter was 4090 footcandles and the 3-watt is 6400 footcandles. The next stage is direct drive.

Re: 3xAAA 1W Luxeon light? ALX-1113A vs Dorcy

After reading the thread on the modified ALX-1113a, I'm realy concerned about buying any 1w Luxeon flashlight. I mean, I would expect that they all would be basically the same.... but it seems like they are not - in color, light output, etc.... Below is the chart from the ALX-1113a test.
The "stock" ALX-1113 is only 135 FC ??? and a MiniMag is 511... and the ALX has a puke green color vs white !
Bummer - almost bought one on eBay today... glad I didn't -
Now - I wonder how the Dorcy looks in the real world ?

1. Stock Nuwai ALX-1113, 1-watt- 135 foot-candles
2. Streamlight Jr. Luxeon, 1 watt- 380 foot-candles
3. Nuwai ALX-1113A, 3 watt (modified, low beam)- 470 foot-candles
4. Min*mag (stock)- 511 foot-candles
5. Madmax Lite, 3 watt- 521 foot-candles
6. Gerber LX 3.0, 3 watt- 746 foot-candles
7. Badboy 650 3 watt- 762 foot-candles
8. Badboy 400, 3 watt- 769 foot-candles
9. ProMagnum, 3 watt- 1,188 foot-candles
10. Nuwai ALX-1113A, 3 watt (modified, high beam)- 1,291 foot-candles

Yeah! That's what I'm looking for - well, sort of... At least size-wise (and has a AAA carrier).

What's an "EMT 1W Luxeon"? Where'd those come from? The auction seems to be in line with those overadvertised cheap items. Even if this were a nice light, the auction notice doesn't inspire my confidence. Shipping's $12!
