Anyone know what is involved in modding a kl4 to run a lux III on 2x123?
I know that the stock board wont handle it and a downboy is required.
What kind of modifications are required to install a new sammich and led?
Is it possible to save the old board?

Thanks,
bhds

bhds,

I've done lots of KL4 mods in the fashion that you are referring. It involves fabricating a new circuit housing, if you want to save the existing circuit. I've done this plenty of times. Your old board and luxeon will be salvaged and returned to you if you want them. I was in the practice of offering a $20 for the used luxeon if I liked the color and I had a need for a 5W luxeon.

If you're interested, let me know via PM.

bhds,
The old board can be save. And the mod is reversible.
Simply opened the head, de-soldering the circuit from the "cathode ring". (There is two points attached to the outer negative of the circuit)
The DB will fit nicely in the cave as shown in red circle.

If you can not do it yourself, simply ask help from Chop. I think he modded plenty SF's head & have the best technique on it.

If you do this, I would recommend not removing the bezel ring, unless you have a compelling reason to do so. The reflector is very delicate and can be easily damaged.

I also do more that just sit the downboy in the contact housing. I fabricate a new aluminum housing. The housing facilitates getting the heat out for the luxeon and the circuit.
