I haven't found any good answer to this question yet. I use Nikwax "Tech Wash" to clean my Patagonia fleece jacket and vest--just to be safe--but it's expensive (and stinky) stuff, and I don't want to use it to clean my insulating Patagonia and Marmot undergarments. What do people use and recommend? I have heard the following: anything; tide; woolite; dreft (?); any powdered laundry soap/detergent.

What's the real story here? What is the best, safest thing to use that doesn't cost $4 a load?

I would use any normal laundry detergent. Woolite would certainly be safe.

The things to remember are not to use fabric softener on wicking polyesters (capaline) and keep all of these synthetics away from a hot clothes dryer. They hang dry quickly.

Use regular soap, gentle cycle & double-rinse.

Hand wash your base layer/wicking tops with mild detergent then hang them up to dry. I've found all other methods (especially mechanical) eventually ruin the fleece's ability to wick sweat away.

Yes, yes, I've read this so many times, but my question is:

WHAT IS A "MILD DETERGENT"?

What do you USE?

Regular washing powder, any kind will work. Just use it sparingly. You dont need to pay big bucks for some high tech soap.
