The beam profile of the HD LS emitters suggests that it might be useful without optics. Would anyone be willing to take some beam shots of one without optics and one with for comparison? Any color (including white) would be fine.

What does the term "with optics" mean. I often see some say "... for sale Luxeon Star with optics".

The LS/o or "Luxeon Star with Optics" comes with a collumator and a holder that's glued onto the heatsink. Visit Lumiled's website and you can see photos of the variations.

If you take the optics (collimator, lense, whatever) off an LS, you will get a VERY broad smooth area type light with no central focus whatsover. This may be useful for certain things, but is useless as a flashlight. Buy them with the optics, since you can always just remove them (and the bracket, holder, whatever).
