Can I use a 2 x R123 = 8.4 Volts on a Surefire U2?

Someone posted that putting 2xR123s in a U2 makes it run in its highest level regardless of what level you dial to. May not be good for the light.
From what I recall of that post, it put the light into direct-drive, or so it seemed, bypassing the circuits entirely. Dunno if burning out the LED that way is covered under warranty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
And I don't think you'd get enough voltage with a dummy cell in there. The Pilas seem to work okay, though.
