I just found out that the L2 has much more output than an L4. Does anyone know why? After all, they have the same LED, so either one light underdrives or the other overdrives it.

Mine are not too noticeably different other than the tint. The L2 is a bit brighter but not dramatically.

The L2 drives the LED a bit harder, the rest is the ever present luxeon lottery /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I'm not sure that there is a big difference. My two L4s (purchased recently) are as bright as my L2s, and the brighter of the two L4s is brighter than all my 5-watt Surefires.

Maybe the recent L4s have been improved? Or am I lucky to have bright L4s (or conversely unlucky to have dim L2s)??
