those things are watertight.your son didnt damage it but wash it anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eeew.gif
leaky battery damage or roll crimp more likely.

Read the FAQs. Give the threads and contacts a good cleaning, re-lube, and install a new battery. If it's had a lot of use (or overtightening), you might have to redo the solder blob. Those fixes will take care of 98% of AAA problems outside of the defective chip problem (that chip wasn't used in the red CPF edition).

My blue CPF Edition ARC AAA crapped out a few months ago. Following an idea from this forum, I took the the head, held it at a 45 degree angle and rolled the crimp area against a knife blade with hard pressure. This fixed it.
