This has gotta be one of the simplest light projects ever.
I needed a quick way to light my work on my Bausch and Lomb zoom stereo microscope. Four Luxeon 1W Star/O units and some foam tape to the rescue!
A photograph through the lens (it actually looks much better than that using my eyes). The big bumps at the bottom are on 0.1 inch centers:
