Thought I would try here first. Just recientally, I have been unable to run task manager under XP. every time I open it I get a box that says, task manager disabled by your administrator.....wait a minute I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR!!! I am guessing that my 2 year old got in there and did something. The TASKMGR.EXE is in the system32 dir, but it wont run from there either.

Any ideas???

Try this -

Click Start,

Click Run

Then type gpedit.msc and click OK,

Double Click on the user configuration Icon on the right window

Double Click on the Administrative Templates

Double Click on system

Double click on logon /logoff

then double click on the Disable Task manager Icon

Then select Disable ( *Note that you are to select Disable and not Enable),

Click Apply and then OK.

That should do it.

Do you have more than one user account on the pc ?

Although you are the administrator you may be logged into an account with only basic user rights.

Also worth running a virus/spyware scan as many of these types of programs try to disable task manager so you can't see/stop them running in the active processes window.

I think with Windows XP at this point (instead of logon/ logoff) you need to click on "Ctrl+Alt+Del" Options

May just be my version of xp /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK well gpedit.msc from the run window dosent work, says the file dosent exist. And when I do the ctrl+alt+del, I get the popup that it has been disabled. I will update and run my adaware, norton didnt find anything, And I only have I login, I put it there to keep the kids out.

Thanks to all.

If malware has disabled Task Manager it may have disabled your installed anti-virus also. I'd try running an on-line virus scan. I believe all the anti-virus vendors have a free one.
