Would you mean the top plastic retaining ring? I tried to unwind it 'counterclockwise', but very tight. Is it being retained by some adhesive?

yes, need to use circlip removal tool. mine came right off, but Don had it off modding the resistor.
my other L1 locking ring is pretty tight. I'm spoiled by having a collet set to hold tailcap w/o scratching.
you can make one by drilling a hole slightly smaller than tail into two pieces of wood. to form a custom tailcap holder.
