I wanted to know what is the difference between "lambertian", "batwing" and " side-emitting" LEDs and wich one is more suitable to mod a 3D maglite?

I heard that the Lamertian style are less suceptible to color variation. In other words, your odds of winning the "Luxeon Lottery" are higher.

I don't know for sure, though.

Lambertian (high dome) has the most even beam pattern, weighted towards the center of the "beam."

Batwign (low dome) has intensity peaks off the center of the "beam."

Side-emitters have intensity peaks at roughly 90 degrees off "beam" center and are intended to be used with flatter incadescent-style reflectors.

mrme: that used to be true, but now there is a new LD part # that has the same type of phosphur layer process as the HD. The streamlight JR luxeon uses this new LD.
