Re: There\'s a new light at the end of the tunnel

It's been around for a dozen or so years in Europe and ten or so years in the US veternary field. FDA approval was after a test period were no one got worse after using it. There is much anecdotal information claiming good results but there is also much anecdotal information that says putting magnets in your socks cures baldness.Time will tell if it works or not.

A Google search on "fda laser carpal" will give you lots of information.
Seems it cures cancer also.
It's hard to find anything of real value. One site says the results of the clinical trials "will" be published in peer review journals.
That comment alone puts it under a *lot* of suspicion. Shining a light on a piece of skin is hardly patentable so first to publish is first to claim validity (and gain market).
Peer review is how science is done and *is* something you do as part of the process.

Sounds like a candidate for Randi's money.

Rothrandir...
Buy the light for novelty only and get your mom some vitamin B6 and an ace bandage for her Carpal Tunnel.
The B6 worked wonders for me. (ask your doctor.)

Cost is somewhere in the neighborhood of a small used car. Ain't it great what you can buy when you can charge it off to expense thru Medicare and uninsured patients at $100 per visit..

No batteries needed, runs on old fashioned snake oil...

A "cold laser"??

Is that like a freeze ray? Any super-villains here who can tell us about them from experience?

Remember there are alot of vested interests in 'medicine' and all of them want to trash anything that threatens that vested interest. Same in all fields of 'science'.

Speaking of Randi, if God appeared to him, he would think it is a fraud.

If you want this stuff further tested and fda approved then you should ask your doctors about it. There is good evidence recently for specific wavelengths of light being able to aid in healing, check out the near infrared LED's being tested and used for similar things. By turning this into a laser you are just enabling this light to reach deeper tissues. By "cool laser" I think they are just meaning that it is not sending in energy that will cause heating of tissues. This has a bad name recently with all the cellphone data that shows that heating of tissues is bad.

There is no need to invoke a medical/industrial conspiracy. The problem is that the testing that needs to be done to prove efficacy and safety (although I can't imagine how this particular thing could hurt you any) is long term and expensive. So the only way it gets done is if a drug or medical equipment company can make money selling the thing and can patent it so that they get to keep making money for a while. You can argue about whether or not they really need to do this to recoup their investments forever, but since they don't disclose their actual internal accounting you can't know for sure. It's obvious that they make a LOT of money though.

Doctors cannot prescribe a treatment that is not tested in the approved manner because they are liable for what they do. Their actions have to be legally defensible. The only way they can do this is by pointing to studies done in the traditional way. So a doctor will give you an approved treatment that might not be as effective as something that was just discovered last week, but they know very well how effective it is, on average, and they also know exactly how likely you are to suffer any side affects from it. (I believe the figure it less that 2% of people taking a particular drug have to suffer side affect bad enough to make them stop taking it. So if you're one of the 2% then you will have bad side affects, but for most people they will be OK) So it may appear that they are being recalcitrant in the acceptance of new treatments, but they are just waiting for the studies that prove it. The other problem here is that Doctors are human, it is easier to keep doing what you know than to learn new things. Doctors have to work very hard to stay on top of new discoveries and techniques, if you are not happy with the treatment you are getting, explain why to your doctor and get another one. If you stay with a doctor who is not adequately treating you then you have no one to blame but yourself.

If you want to go to someone who is not legally responsible for what they recommend to you, then you can get this now I'm sure.

So encourage the testing, if it works it will become available as a treatment.

Thats not to say that there are not good drugs or treatments that are not worth these companies investment because they can't make any money off them. I'm sure that this is true.
