LED and heat

I have soldered a red luxeon like emitter of about 1W and found that the diode inside glowed when I was soldering negative leg to the wire with my 40W soldering device. This happened too with the positive leg. I never know that a LED could glow with heat! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Have anyone seen this before??

I have also seen this once, but attributed it to a electrically charged soldering iron...

40W seems a bit much for everyday electronics work...
