Hey Folks,

Here is the continuation of Centigrade from Chapter Eight. Please see this thread for the previous chapters:

(I highly recommend you read those first, otherwise this won't make much sense at all)

As an aside, Jim and John really are the only people who's personalities really mimic that of the people who's names they borrowed (rothrandir & jtice). The others, such as Klaus, Ferdyan, Dan Tran, etc. have snippets of actual personality, as best as I can recreate it from my conversations with them, but I fill in a lot of gaps with my own imagination. Please bear in mind that this is a work of fiction, and no one in here, regardless of their namesake, has actually done any of the things that are described in this work. The folks I used as my characters were chosen because they're all great people I know who had names that fit the part. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

All that being said, I hope you enjoy it, and please let me know what you think.

Chapter Nine
A man sits in a Las Vegas casino, the Luxor. Through a one-way only window he gazes at the people crawling across the game room floors. Their faces are varied expressions of serious, most probably having lost money. A woman in her 80s jumps up and down excitedly as nickels pour out like a river from one of the machines.

The man sighed and turned away from the window.

"I hate Vegas." He muttered.

With that he departed toward the personnel elevator and stuck a key in to unlock the top floor button. The doors closed and the elevator zoomed upwards.

The man was of short stature, a head of dark hair and scraggly sideburns lining the sides of his round face. Atop his nose sat a pair of round-lensed glasses.

At last the elevator reached the designated floor and he stepped out into his suite. At least, it was his for today, anyway.

A woman laid on the bed in the bedroom and beckoned to him as he walked past. Mildly enthused, he removed his tuxedo and began unbuttoning his shirt. He had half his pants off and suddenly she lunged at him, wrapping her naked body around his, arms around the neck and legs around the back.

Making love with Christine Conrad was always an athletic affair requiring a series of rooms and surfaces. Nonetheless he enjoyed his times of pleasure whenever his few and far between chances presented themselves.

In the throes of passion his cell phone rang.

"poop" he groaned amidst the caresses of his partner.
"Don't answer it babe…" she gasped.

It continued ringing through his lovemaking.

"Damn it!" he exclaimed, and ended his act. Christine scowled.

In one swift motion he bent down and ripped the snarling phone out his tuxedo jacket.

"This is Paul Gautier," he answered angrily, "this had better be good."

"Paul. Dan here. There's been a bit of trouble in Germany. You need to meet with me and Sasha as soon as possible."

Paul grumbled over the line.

"You morons can't take care of stuff on your own so you have to drag me out of here while I'm busy in order to correct your mistakes. Unbelievable. What is it that's going on?"

Christine got up off the bed and tried to coax Paul back, but he pushed off her touch and walked to another area of the suite.

"Well… Chris has had a bit of… uh… trouble… taking care of business. He lost the targets at the moment but he's still tracking them." Dan continued.

"How the hell is he tracking them if he doesn't know where they went?!"

Dan stayed quiet.

"Christ." Paul said as he began to put his clothes back on, "I'll be there in a few hours, let me pack and get out of here."

With that he hung up the phone and continued redressing, while Christine pouted in the adjoining room.

"C'mon babe…"

"No time, sorry." Paul replied, and threw her clothes back at her.

"What do you mean, 'no time?' you're one of the most powerful – "

"I told you not to say that to me. I'm sorry, I have to go. Hopefully next time we'll have better luck."

Paul's tone indicated that to be the end of the conversation, and Christine angrily let it be. By now he had redressed himself and was pulling his bag out of a closet near the suite entrance. He picked up his cell phone again and dialed a number.

Holding the phone to his chest, he asked Christine to offer his thanks to William Faulkner, who had put him up during his stay in Las Vegas, then he began his conversation.

"Hey Nick, I need to leave here to meet with Dan, please have the plane ready. I'll be there in half an hour."

"Will do sir."

"Thanks."

Paul kissed Christine good-bye, rolled the garment bag into the elevator, and left.
