Animations Question

I would like to put together a powerpoint presentation that incudes animations. There are several people here whos avatars include animations, and I was wondering if anyone could help me find where to get these, and how to use them?
What is the file type? I know this is a vague question, but any help would be appreciated.

those are usually animated GIF files.

I use Photoshop to draw the individual frames, and Gif Construction Set to assemble them into an animated .GIF image.
That's how I constructed the "urinator-destroying flashlight" graphic in my signature line.
