"Receiver" is sort of an old-fashioned word but I still use it. "Handset" in techie circles has come to mean a cellular phone (the whole phone, not just the mic/speaker). This would be in a technical discussion (the base station supports 5000 handsets), not normal conversation (pass me the handset).
