By lifetime, I assume you mean how long before the luxeon LED dies? Their lifespan is rated in the thousands of hours. It will also depend on how you use the L2. Using the L2 primarily on low with occasional bursts of high power should give a longer lifespan compared to constantly using the L2 on high. There is a thread in the LED forum now discussing how long it will take for a Luxeon to die:

As far as whether or not it is a good light compared to its competitors, what do you consider as its competitor? Also, you have to define what you mean by "good light". Is it better in terms of beam quality? Brightness? Runtime? Quality of construction?

Fear not, the L2 does not have a "short life".
The L2 does not have any competitors. There is no other flashlight that can do what it does and be what it is.
For me, there is currently no flashlight better suited to my EDC requirements and I don't see one comng along any time soon.
