I called up Surefire today and the rep that picked it up told me that putting a kl1 head on an L2 body should work fine, without two stages of course. Has anyone tried this before?

i think there is circuity in the L2 body...hence the high pitched noise it makes.
Not sure if it'll work though

The high output on the L2 was quoted the other day round here as 9 V (it's a "dumb head" running a 5 watt Lux). The electronics are in the body just like the L1. The KL1 will run 3 cells ,ie , 9 V.
Don't try it with a KL4 though, you might fry it.
Sorry if you knew some of this Tom,I know you're not daft!

Just a further thought Tom. Not sure how efficient it'll be as you are runnung through two converters. The KL1 converter board is the reason you won't get the low setting,it will boost up the volts as it's designed to run on 3-9v anyway.
Someone else will tell you better but if each converter is 75% efficient, then your normal one hour runtime will be only 45 mins. something to think about maybe.
