It is direct drive off of 3 nimh c cells.
Current starts off at 4 amps when the batteries are recently charged.
Then drops off to around 2.5-3 during the last half of the batteries charge.
But even when one battery poops out before the others, there is still plenty of usable light to find your way to another set of charged ones.

The 3C lights with multiple stars on them are really great stuff. My Mag3X is still a hot favorite despite having ridiculously high powered lights like 10W HIDs and 40W incans.
