Taiwanese manufacturer Harvatek has announced the availability of white LEDs that deliver 30 lm at 350 mA, 60 lumens at 700 mA, and 100 lumens at 1.05 A (see Harvatek announces ultra-bright white LEDs). Harvatek has licensed its white LED technology from Osram Opto Semiconductors (see Osram grants LED patent license to Harvatek).

The new devices, offering 30-100 lumens, will compete with existing products such as Lumileds' Luxeon, Nichia's Jupiter, Osram's Golden Dragon, Cree's XLamp, Cotco's Dorado as well as offerings from Toyoda Gosei and Rohm.

With a thermal resistance of 22C/Watt, putting anything more than a watt through these things seems pointless. An R&D staff of 27 does not make them much more than a packager either. They claim long life, but that is something that seems rarely backed up by real data. Even Nichia is no where near the life of Lumileds when run at high temperature. More than enough light for flashlights, but flashlight sales are not going to drive down the prices to where we want them to be. Competition is always good though!

Ah, but the Nichia is fine with standard SMT line processes, and withstands a reflow oven, so does the CREE, where as the current luxeon melts, as it cannot stand the heat. Maybe this will change this summer, fingers crossed...Luxeon IV
