Hi!
I am preparing my university graduation-paper, and the subject I have chosen regards marketing research. You've probably guessed by now, it's about flashlights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
It would help me a lot to have a list of the activities where flashlights are used.

So here comes the request to all you CPF-ers:
Could you please mention the 3 most important activities you use your flashlights for?
(If you feel it would be unjust to mention only 3, please feel free to mention any activity that you consider worth mentioning)
Thanks

I am in the urban setting most of the time, so here are some of my usage:

1) light source when going into unlit area
2) additional light source when looking into shadowy places(ex small object dropped under a car in full day light)
3) Absolutely-last-ditch self defense weapon(besides resorting...)

In order of most important to least:

1) light to walk by: to the car, avoiding dog poo in the yard, going in back of the house, etc. Maybe 15 lumens, white.

2) light to read by: maps, panel boxes, notebooks, and books. 1-2 lm, white, or red sometimes better.

3) Checking things at a distance: which dog is in the yard, what's that on the roof, etc. 60-100 lm white.

Target illumination for identification as well as condition or "activity" purposes.

Typical targets:

Part being machined where spot light or "highlighting" relative to ambient is required.

Terrain for successful movement; ingress and egress (ambient or impaired night vision require additional artificial lighting)

Lost or dropped item.

Dog "mines" to be removed.

Critters and other sources of noise.

Areas of interest in relative shaddow or absolute darkness.

1) Walking outside at night (walking dog, or just for activity)

2) Fishing

3) Comparing lights with other lights, just for funh (both are the same thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Good luck with your paper /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well...the most frequent activity is seeing in the dark /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif. The most important activity is for Fire/EMS calls. My light gets the most work on traffic control.

Hello DragonFlame,

Good luck on your paper...

I use my lights mostly at work. I inspect things and use the light to illuminate items in the shadows.

I also use lights working on cars, camping, working around the house, going for walks, and checking what went bump in the middle of the night.

The most fun I have is when I show several lights to people and get them thinking of the different beam patterns and style of lights available. Most people have a pre-conceived idea of a flashlight, and it always brings a smile to my face when I am able to shatter that notion.

The best uses for flashlights in my opinion are

(1)search for something in the dark.

(2)safety, so you are aware of where you are during nighttime hours, and aware of your surroundings.

(3)basically-INCREASE VISIBILITY.
