Peak LED -- \"2 level\"?

I love my Kilimanjaro 5 LED high power snow model, and would like to pose a couple of questions:

1) When I twist the bezel a bit less than fully, I get a constant, non-flickering beam that is roughly half the intensity of full power with a complete twist. This "lower level" is perfect for a reading light and close-up work, and I am wondering if I will get longer battery runtime using it, or, conversely, will I be damaging the flashlight?

2) The primary weakness of this beautiful little Peak is lack of full regulation---the discharge curve is pretty steep. I'm generally opposed to using lithium AAs due to the cost, but am wondering if I would realize any benefit, in terms of a more constant output, if I invested in a charger and a couple of rechargeable AAs. Any insight/experience would be welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help.
