Measures 2.5 amps with partially discharged nimhs.
A Modamag 3x3 so20 heatsink was used.
I'll take this to work tomorrow and see what happens there.
More to come.

Here it is versus a 2c stock maglite.

And here it is versus the 2c and two fixtures with 3x32 watt flouro tubes 10+ feet up.

Try that with 4 NiMH Cs just for the sake of it.

Just did the next best thing.
I tried it with 3 fully charged nimh D cells.
4.15 amps going through these 3 TYOH's = nice and bright now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif
The photos had 3 nicad 5000mah D cells at 2.7 amps.

update:
3 fresh Rayovac alkaline D cells can shove 3.4 amps through this 3xTYOH light.

4... amps...

What have you got against the magic smoke staying where it belongs?

I sincerely hope you have those things wired in parallel.

They're assuredly all parallel. In fact, if they were wired in series, the Vf of the batt pack would be so far below the LED string's Vf, ensuring they'd never light up... built in protection /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

3.4amps from alkalines, nice!! but I wonder for how long?

4amps is way too much. That's borderline fried. 1.3amp for one lux in a perfect heatsinked enviroment is borderline... Let alone 3!! Plus the Vf probably isn't perfectly matched, so one might be pulling more!!!

Re: Modamag 3x3 3d with TYOH pics

4.15amp / 3 = 1.38 amps per lux

a nice toasty setup! good thing there's a chunk of heatsink there.

Re: Modamag 3x3 3d with TYOH pics

Oh, yes, these are in parallel running on 3 D cells.
Plus, these are lower voltage leds with more overdriving headroom.
3.3 volts X 1.3 amps = 4.29 watts.
4.29 watts x3= only 12.87 watts.

Compare to a 4D trilight3 at 5.0 volts at 1 amp to each led with .4 ohm resistor = 5 watts.
5x3 = 15 watts going through the head.
The resistor gets a small piece of the power, The led gets most of the rest.

This is one of the reasons ***H leds are so favorable for overdrive compared to say.. ***L or ***M.

Is that right?? Hmm, in that case if I'm going to shove a 3 x 5W configuration in a 5D mag I'd be better off looking into using something called a H LED? Or is this only assuming I'll be overdriving it?

The 5 watt leds are a very different animal as far as required voltage goes.
Your 5D mag should be A-O-K with 3 of them.
In fact, underdrive may be the real worry with a 5D and three 5 watters, but it should still be quite wonderful anyways. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Congrats on the light, 3rd shift! 1.38A per lux?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Wow, 'toasty' indeed, but must be a great scene to watch! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What's the runtime like? And how warm does it get?

Re: Modamag 3x3 3d with TYOH pics

I'll get those numbers tonight at work when I take my temp probe with me along with some new Rayovac alkaline D cell batteries.
The runtimes:
Appears to be about 2 hours flat on 5000mah nicad D cells from www.amondotech.com
Nimh Nexcell 8500mah D cells are the ones that heat this light up.
These look good for about 2.5-3.5 hours with this light at this point.

Otherwise, it's looking like Alkaline batteries are the best to use with this light for anyone with access to free batteries at work.
I think I may have the perfect leo 3D led flashlight here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Modamag 3x3 3d with TYOH pics

Oh, I believe you bigtime sir. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif
I have a 3c 4x3 with 4 TWOJ binned leds, and it just ROCKS!

I also went the b2eze route with that one.

Unfortunately that kit may not work as I see it pictured if it is for a c cell light with so20's.
The bulb adaptor may not fit as mine didn't.
No biggie though, as you can always gut the mag bulb tower as I did,
for even more power to the leds by soldering them to the switch assembly.

Also, you may need to bevel the edges of that sink to get it to sit down all the way in with good thermal contact.
These are issues that b2eze is currently working on at this time with his nextgen copper sinks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

edit:
Welcome to cpf!!

another edit:
I let the nimh batteries calm down for a few hours before doing temp readings on that 3x3 TYOH setup.
Starting at 3.1 amps and running for 30 minutes ending at 2.6 amps with a room temp of 75F:
It reached a temp of 120F on the exterior of the bezel.
The sink inside reached a temp of 150F at the stars.

Clearly there is still room for improvement here, but it's looking good already. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now the 4x3 3c TWOJ was left on for 45 minutes during one of my foot patrols through the building.
It started at 3.8 amps, and ended at 2.1 amps.
It was a few degrees cooler than the 3D due to the c cell nimh batteries wimping out.
This is the b2eze one also awaiting some improvements.

So with everyone making multiple 3w mag conversions, what do you guys think about single 5w conversions in comparison? Has the Space Needle been made obsolete?

Afraid so.
I for one have been unable to get my sn2 clones to sell lately.
The multi 3 watt led lights are really catching on.
Xbin, even Ybin lumens for a fraction of the price makes the 3x3 and 4x3 watt lights make so much sense now.

Re: Modamag 3x3 3d with TYOH pics

Steven, great work. Beautiful bright and white light.
Just be careful when you go with 4xCs NiMh. It's ~1.5A thru each of those rare TY0H.

The 4x3W with 20mm reflector (IMS SO20XA) have already been solved with the PQS . The light output of this thing rivals that of the MiniHID.

Single LuxV DD mods (eg SN2) is not quite obselete. It's just that the market have been oversaturated with high power Luxeon mods that's why your SN2 clone is not selling.

Then again every time I head to my back yard, I tend to pick up my dimmable Minetrois instead of my FatMag.
