Light #1 - 3 x Lux III TXOK in a 4D Mag uses 4 D alkies in direct drive mode.

Light #2 - 1 Lux III TWOL in a 3D Mad uses 3 D alkies in direct drive mode.

Looking for suggestions on improving them without severely shortening their runtimes. I would like to find a way to change the battery configuration so it runs on rechargeable nimhs. Would be interested in regulation suggestions as well.

The 3d should be ok with nimh D cells from www.amondotech.com
and a Vanson bc-1hu charger.
The 4D probably should remain used for alkalines to keep the led from getting overdriven.

you could use a dummy D cell and then 3 NIMH for the 4D and drive current would be 2-3 amps just right for luxIII at 700ma/1000ma.

Rewire the 4D Mag so that the 3 Luxeons are in series. Get georges80's awesome nFlex driver for regulation and 8 levels of variable power - this way you can always pick the optimal power level for your application and thus runtime stops becoming a big issue.

Put 12 AA cells into the thing using 3toD adapters to drive the nFlex and LEDs. Enjoy!
