In liked the article. I don't usually do this, but I'm going to point out 3 rather obvious errors in the text...

Below a picture of a 5mm and 3mm LED they label them "LCD's"

[ QUOTE ]
The new high-power LED technology incorporates a large chip that is mounted on a heat-sink sub-mount. This increases the thermal resistance and enables a higher input power.

[/ QUOTE ]

and finally

[ QUOTE ]
The existing HMI interface being used in a high-end hot tub could not be seen in low level lighting

[/ QUOTE ] I believe they mean to say that it was ONLY able to be seen in low level lighting...

Anybody spot any more fun in that article?

I saw that Lumitex product demomstrated over a year ago, and it was hardly "new" then. The rep was somewhat uncertain about my suggestion to use a Luxeon for daylight-readable brightness, or to backlight signage.

Actually Poly-Optical and Lumitex have made those for years now.

See links below:

Fiber optic array lighting for LEDs

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this product before or not:

How does it work?

As I recall, they have had them since at least 2001, but not with Luxeons.

Re: Luxeons find their way into flexible backlight

The article discusses white LEDs, but the Luxeon shown in the photo wasn't a white one as there was no phosphor coating. This may or may not be an error if they're planning on turning out colored backlights, but the backlit panels shown in the article were white.

They have been making the panels for awhile now; I have a sample of one using 2 white Nichia LEDs and so does Craig. The only thing that's new is their choice of Luxeons for the light source.
