XLamp UV drop in MiniPro pill *** lots of pics***

I got in on the Cree XLamp group buy a while back, so I figured it was time to finally do something with them! The host driver pill is an adjustable MiniPro from Lambda.


The Cree LED is just a little too large to allow the supply wires to wrap around the edges so I had to grind a bit off the corners. Note the copper under the plating.



I also removed the bottom solder contact pads so they wouldn't short against the heatsink.



A dry fit on the pill.



I used Arctic Silver and coated the corners to insulate the supply wires.

Beamshot - both are CreeUV XLamps. The one on the left was from an earlier mod and has an NX05 optic. The one on the right is the UV MiniPro in a MiniMag with a reflector. There is great spill with the reflector.


Same order as above but the MiniPro MiniMag now has an NX05 optic as well.

How well does it make stuff glow?

This thing works great! It's got a very nice flood using a reflector and really great throw with an optic. Unfortunately my camera seems to get washed out very easily and glowing objects don't come out very well.

The scorpions are safe unless I go to a pet store and turn off the lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They were purchased from this group buy . That page lists the wavelength to be 390-410nm. I believe someone else mentioned that they were around 395nm.

Then be careful, 395 can hurt the eyes with prolonged exposure.

You can try the invisible ink test; use some laundry detergent, liquid Tide works great, mix it 50/50 with water and write on a sheet of paper. Should be invisible in normal light, but light up under the UV.

Prestone antifreeze should work too, but a little more toxic than detergent, and longer drying./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

That's the one. I've been racking my brain as to who to best set the Cree UV in the Nuwai Q3 and it looks like between the two threads you have it. Did you try it in the Q3? Love the spill. What kind of battery?

wmpwi, I have an adapter made for the Q3 (this thread), but I haven't tried the UV pill in it yet. The batteries were just alkalines in the pics above.

Here is runtime off of 2x Energizer 2300 NiMH that have been sitting for a couple of weeks. Left axis is relative brightness, bottom is minutes. MiniMag with a Kroll. The output is not quite as flat from my experience using TxxJ Luxeons. I attribute that to the relatively higher Vf of the Crees (previously measured at approx 3.6V @360mA).
