DB917 pulling 400ma from a R123, meaning it\'s DD?

If a Downboy 917 only draws 420mA, it's running in direct drive, correct?

I believe once the voltage to the downboy is lower than the vF of the emmiter then it goes into direct drive.

Hmm, that's odd...
The PRT was still very bright when the ammeter read 400mA with a single R123, but with two relatively fresh CR123s, it read 8xx

Going from 400mA to 800ma on a LuxIII will not "double" it's visable output. In fact, the LS is way more efficient at lower power. At higher drive power a much greater percentage is lost as heat. 400mA is a nice and very practical drive level for small lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif (Yes, "hotrodding" can be fun too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

One of my favorite "practical" combos is a DB500 with a T??H emitter. With a Pila 168S, this light will run for 2.5 hours in regulation, and with an R123 I would guess you would get at least an hour.

You might ask, why not just use a Wiz2 if I want to use a rechargeable Li-Ion? Well the Downboy is very stable on low (through the McE2S resistor), while a Wiz2 is likely to flicker a bit, and I suspect the Downboy is also more efficient.

Thanks, I really wanna be able to throw in a normal 123, though
