Hybrid "Shake" 7-LED Flashlight

Hybrid "Shake" 7-LED Flashlight is powered by batteries or — as a fail-safe backup — you can just shake it to illuminate one LED. The batteries power all seven LEDs for super-bright illumination. The always-ready "Shake" is available — with a built-in magnet that slides rapidly between metal coils to charge the Hybrid's capacitor.

Perfect for power outages or emergencies, the Hybrid "Shake" 7-LED Flashlight is powered by batteries or — as a fail-safe backup — you can just shake it to illuminate one LED. The batteries power all seven LEDs for super-bright illumination. But if the batteries are running low, the always-ready "Shake" is available — with a built-in magnet that slides rapidly between metal coils to charge the Hybrid's capacitor.

It's all explained by Faraday's Law of Induction (if you want to look it up). You get about five minutes of continuous light when charged (shaken) for 30 seconds. This robust torch has a sure-grip rubber body with shockproof water-resistant housing. Measures 10 1/4" x 2 1/2" diameter. Weighs 15 oz. Uses 3 AA batteries (order separately) or built-in magnetic-coil charger. 90-day warranty. Select green or pewter.

Target sells a version of the dynamo light for $15.
I think that Home Depot or Lowes sells their own version also, same price range.

I've seen the second one in person (my girlfriend works for SI), and those "red" LED's on the side are red-filtered whites, not native red. I could tell by the not-quite-saturated look of them... odd.

The Dynamo light is now available at Costco in a 2 pack for 19.99. Specs are a little different though as they claim 45 minutes run time for a minute of cranking. Didn't notice what the warranty was, figured at $10 apiece, they're throwaway lights. The red flashers are definitely behind a red lens rather than being red LEDs.

Ugh. Red LEDs would be more efficient than whites behind a filter ... unless they just put up that red filter for no other reason than because people expect red light to come from behind a red lens.
