Emitter Losing Brightness

This is in reference to one of the Costco AA lights that I purchased. The one I have been using is losing brightness. I changed the batteries and then checked the voltage at the solder tabs at the star and it looks correct.

Do the emitters go bad? This has been through light use only and is puzzling.

Emitters can go bad if they're overdriven and/or inadequately heatsinked.

The original set up is a 1W emitter. Can I unsolder the original and solder on a TVIL as a replacement? A 3W?

So about how many hours have you put on the light? Alkalines or nimhs?

Not too many. I did change the reflector with one from the Shoppe. Hours, maybe 5-10 max. I think they are still the original batteries. So maybe less than 5 hours. I am running it on the alkalines-Duracells.
