Confused! Uses 4 side emitter. High VS. low dome

What applications are the side emitters best suited for and are optics or reflectors best used with them?

Also, what would be the determining factor regarding the choice of high dome versus low dome?

What, if anything is different about the Lux V portable compared to the "normal" Luxeon Vs?

Thanks for tolerating the "newbie" questions. I could have used the search feature, but guess I'm too lazy to sift through the results for a couple of hours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Side emitters are best suited to reflectors. They reflect most of their output via a little thing attached to the top of the emitter out in a circle perpendicular to the axis, and so need to reflect off the reflector out to the front. They would also be great for a lantern or something that needed light all around the outside rather than in a beam.

high dome has a more concentrated beam and hotspot in the middle, even without much of a reflector or optic. You might also find that there are different bins available for the different kinds, meaning differing forward voltages and color temperature. You might find you like the color and beam better from one or the other, experiment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The lux 5 portable has a limited phosphor life before it starts to seriously degreade. They aren't up to the 100k hours of a regular LED, and can be at half output in what, a thousand or a couple of thousand hours? But they are very bright and less expensive than the other kinds. So if you're making a flashlight it doesn't really matter as how many really get used for thousands of hours, but for an all night light or a project where you can't get to the light easily to change in the distant future, you might want to use something else.

Thanks James!

I have been considering converting a couple of Halogen Torchiers over to led (NOT using the halogen transformer)! to cut down on the incredible amount of heat generated by the halogen bulb. Sounds like side emitters or low domes might be a good choice for that configuration.

Luxeon V = blue/green luxeon V
Luxeon V portable = White Luxeon V

The "portable" name is to give a marketing spin to a part with a less-than-stellar lifespan compared to other Luxeon V products. Portable means "It's a white LED, but won't last as long as other white LEDs, but it will last longer than bulbs in handheld lights, so use this in handheld lights, it'll last longer than a regular bulb, not not as long as you expect an LED to last".
