Charlie, what do you do for ABC and how did you happen to work with Peter Jennings? Was he as cool, calm and collected in person as he projected into the lens?

Worked with Peter RARELY - a few days here and there of the last 7 years. I'm a software developer, and we did some special Y2K code (for that show), and I ran into him at election time. All dealings I had with him, he was very professional. Unlike some of the other folks, he would actually stop and talk if you "flagged him down" on the street and the like - some of the folks do, some don't (and DO NOT ask me which is which) - BTW there are some other ABC folks around the forum

Thanks, Charlie. My lasting impression of him is one of humble elegance. It sounds like my impression is probably not far from the mark.
A story if I may -
One of the things that I do is maintain an installation of "Jumbotron" style outdoor videowalls. On the morning of 9/11, they had ABC-TV punched up on the boards. I was doing something else that morning when I was suddenly called down to the area by one of the higher-ups who was screaming "where the !%&$ is the AUDIO?!" So I hightailed it down there (not knowing about the attacks yet) and I was struck to find this disaster unfolding in larger-than-life reality on the videowalls.
People were filing out of their offices and gathering there on the plaza to watch the story unfold on the big screens. Everyone was in rapt silence as we watched the events in horror, yet we were helped through it by the fact that Peter Jennings was at the helm, speaking to us in those magnificent, calm, comforting tones, trying his darndest to keep things in perspective when the whole world seemed to be falling apart at the seams.
I will always remember that morning - not only the horror, but how a classy news anchor helped us to keep our collective sanity as we stood there transfixed on the plaza, complete strangers to each other but suddenly a part of a larger family, a united family.
Thank you, Mr. Jennings, for being the Voice of Sanity for us on that day.
