How do I convert avi files to 'normal' dvd?

How do I convert avi files to \'normal\' dvd?

My canon sd200 takes avi movie clips which look great on the computer, but I want to send my non computer literate mother a dvd she can just pop in her dvd player and view on the tv.

Any recommended software out there to do this? Also, what is the basic file format used on dvd movies?
