Long long ago, I saw a program that would make the icons on your desktop really small.
I run multiple monitors, and one of them has alot of icons for certain web links, folders, etc, that I use alot.
But they take up alot of space,
whats the best way, without using a resource hogging program, to make these icons tiny?

Thanks
~John

ah HA! found something actually built into windows.

You can right clcik on the desktop, and goto properties, then Appearnce.
and theres an option to change the icon size, so this isnt too bad.
But, the program I saw long ago, would let you make it display the text to the right of the icon,
this let you stack them better and tighter.

Another thing you can do is to set the distance between icons smaller too. I am running at 1280x1024 with normal icons and tighter spacing between them and have 15 of them on the left side. Changing font type can help also.

I know if you change the settings for your display resolution, that affects everything greatly. Set it for the best resolution, and everything shinks and gives you more room for more icons.

As they said, the bad thing is it wont remember where your icons are, I think you have to save it each time

There are other utilities that will though....

I'm using iconlock at work, but as it's originally from WinMag.com it's about impossible for find the download now. Iconlock doesn't restore automatically after reboot. It has to be done manually.

If you're using a Radeon video card, ATI Tray Tools has a desktop icon position saver. (it's bundled with the Omega Drivers)
I just installed those yesterday, but havn't had a chance to mess with the Tray Tools utility much.

A google search results in lots of hits....

Good Luck!

This is a little different but related...

I prefer to not display any desktop icons at all. Instead I have them all available to me on a pop-up menu from the taskbar. To accomplish this:
1. Right-Click on the Desktop, choose Arrange Icons By, and uncheck Show Desktop Icons

2. Right-Click the Taskbar, select Toolbars, and check Desktop

I just ran across this in an old LangaList newsletter.
I've not downloaded and tested it, but plan to.

From the site:

Iconoid is a Windows desktop icon manager.

Make icon backgrounds transparent
Select any color for icon backgrounds
Save and Restore Icon positions for each (or every) screen resolution
Select any color for icon text
Automatically or manually select the best color for the text background
Dynamically hide icons when you don't need them and show them when you do
Quickly minimize all windows so that you can see your desktop wallpaper.
See the help files (which include screen shots) for even more information.

I create task specific folders on my desktop and place the corresponding icons in them. For example, I have a folder that contains all my "utilities" software. One for my "photo" software. One for my "financial" software .....etc. Works much better than trying to cram a bunch of icons on your desktop. I run 4 monitors by the way.:naughty:
